  Surprised to read some of the earlier reviews as the guys working in the store today, when I went in, were polite and helpful--practically to a fault. As I was leaving, I got some interesting trivia regarding the business. A fire long ago (started in a neighboring basement, apparently) was quite a blow, but not one they couldn't weather--as told engagingly by one of the managers. What's more, they've been open for nearly a century in this East Village spot. That's undeniably saying good about the place, besides my review. Longevity speaks. Definitely a pleasant chat. And yes, prices are a bit high.
